What should you look for when choosing a psychologist?

First Steps

  • Check the person is a registered psychologist via the AHPRA [Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency] website.  ahpra.gov.au. All health practitioners in Australia must be registered with AHPRA to make sure qualification and standards of practice are met
  • Membership of the professional body, the Australian Psychological Society also shows the psychologist’s  interest in best practice of the profession psychology.org.au/. Psychologists note their membership by letters after their name Eg. Ranee Wheat MAPS [Member of the Australian Psychological Society]

  • Working in a group practice provides your therapist opportunities to access advice from colleagues if necessary; one person can’t know everything
  • At RPS we also have alliances with outplacement services, employee assistance providers and can provide WorkCover services
  • We take seriously our responsibility to provide you with research-based therapy. We all undertake professional development each year as well as meet fortnightly for professional development as a group
